Prof John Muteti is the acting CEO of the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), with immediate effect from May 15.
NACADA Board Chair Dr. Stephen Mairori announced the acting CEO will take over as the term of previous CEO Victor Okioma was not renewed.
In a statement issued on May 15, Dr Mariori said that Prof Muteti will steer NACADA’s mandate and said that the acting CEO has a wealth of 30 years experience from academia, as well as the private and public sectors. He will continue to spearhead programs in line with the Authority’s strategic plan.
Prof. Muteti is the Director of Research, Policy and Planning at NACADA.
The NACADA website notes that his role as Director made him in charge of the Research Department, he Policy & Planning Department, Monitoring & Evaluation as well as the Knowledge Management Department.
He will take over from Victor Okioma, who had been appointed in May 2018 to the role of NACADA CEO.
NACADA is a semi-autonomous state corporation that seeks to see a Kenya that is free of drug and alcohol abuse.

Who is Prof Muteti?
Prof Muteti has been an associate professor and senior lecturer in various roles at the Kisii University, the University of Lusaka The Management University of Africa, United States International University-Africa, and Catholic University of Eastern Africa.
He has also been a Senior Economist in the Kenya Government, and a Makueni County Secretary. Currently, Prof Muteti is an advisory board member with Build Africa, and a principal consultant with New-Gen Consulting Services
He holds a Doctorate in Strategic Planning and Management from the Nelson Mandela University, South Africa. He is also an Economics Bachelor’s Degree holder from the University of Nairobi.
Post graduate degrees include a Master’s degree in Economics and Social Studies from the University of Manchester, UK, a Post Graduate Diploma in Social Studies from Victorian University, Manchester, and a Post Graduate Certificate in Project Management from Bradford University, UK.

Outgoing NACADA CEO Victor Okioma is a Public Administrator knowledgeable and experienced in the implementation of government policies related to security, drug
control, and rehabilitation. He holds a Bachelors of Arts Degree and a Master’s Degree in International Studies alongside other professional courses.
Prior to being appointed NACADA CEO in 2018, he served as National Administration Secretary in the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government. Here, he was involved in coordinating the national government’s operations and programmes in Kenya’s 47 Counties.
