Overview

As a Legal Fellow at Roots Africa, you will join our legal team in a developmental role focusing on supporting diaspora real estate investments across Africa. This 12-month fellowship is designed for early-career legal professionals passionate about real estate law and African development. You will gain hands-on experience in cross-border property transactions while supporting our mission to make African real estate investment accessible to the diaspora community.

Requirements

  • Recent law graduate or less than one year of post-qualification experience preferably in the real estate industry.
  • Law degree from an accredited institution with coursework or demonstrated interest in property law, international law, or investment law.
  • Post graduate diploma from Kenya School of Law
  • Strong academic record and research capabilities.
  • Basic understanding of real estate transactions and property rights concepts.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational abilities.
  • Proficiency with legal research tools and basic document management systems.
  • Genuine passion for real estate investment and African development.
  • Interest in the unique challenges and opportunities facing diaspora investors.
  • Eagerness to learn and grow in a fast-paced, cross-cultural environment.

Responsibilities

  • Legal Research: Conduct comprehensive research on real estate laws, regulations, and property rights across various African jurisdictions.
  • Transaction Support: Assist senior legal team members with property transaction documentation, including drafting and reviewing basic legal documents.
  • Due Diligence Assistance: Support the due diligence process by gathering and organizing property documentation, title information, and compliance requirements.
  • Documentation Management: Help maintain organized legal files and property transaction records.
  • Client Communication: Prepare informational materials on legal aspects of property investment for clients and assist with responding to basic legal inquiries.
  • Regulatory Monitoring: Track changes in real estate laws and foreign investment regulations across target African countries.
  • Legal Writing: Draft legal memoranda, research summaries, and contribution to client advisories on property investment matters.
  • Knowledge Development: Create internal reference materials on jurisdiction-specific real estate laws and procedures.
  • Process Improvement: Identify opportunities to streamline legal documentation and transaction processes.
  • Learning and Development: Participate in mentorship sessions, training workshops, and professional development activities to build expertise in African real estate law.
  • Any other tasks that may be assigned from time to time.
