The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) is an independent National Human Rights Institution created under Article 59 of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 and established by the Government of Kenya through an Act of Parliament (the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights Act, 2011) and in accordance with the United Nations Principles relating to the Status of National Institutions (Paris Principles).
KNCHR’s mandate includes furthering the promotion and protection of human rights in Kenya, acting as a watchdog over the Government in the area of human rights, and the provision of Leadership in moving the
country towards a human rights-respecting state. KNCHR fulfils its human rights mandate through five Directorates including, Complaints and Investigations, Research, Advocacy and Outreach, Legal Services, Regional Services and Corporate Services. The Commission has offices in Nairobi, Wajir, Kitale, Mombasa, Kisumu and Nyahururu.

KNCHR hereby invites applications for the position of Senior Legal Officer- Legal Services Directorate 

  • Reports to: Deputy Director, Legal Services
  • Duration: Permanent & Pensionable
  • Duty Station: Nairobi with occasional travel
  • Gross Salary: Kshs. 141,950

Job Purpose:

This position is responsible for the implementation of policies, procedures, plans, strategies, standards and guidelines relating to the functions of the Legal Services.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Attending Court both on behalf of the Commission where it is sued as a corporate entity and petitioners complaining to the Commission alleging violations of human rights.
  2. Drafting contracts/agreements for goods and services on behalf of the Commission.
  3. Preparation and filing of pleadings for and on behalf of the Commission.
  4. Drafting and reviewing legal instruments and policy documents on behalf of the Commission.
  5. Undertaking legal research.
  6. Identifying legal and compliance risks.
  7. Preparing relevant legal opinions.
  8. Support the Implementation of performance targets and work plans for the evaluation and monitoring of staff performance.
  9. Assist in coaching and mentoring staff to provide guidance in career development and growth

Skills, Experience and Minimum Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Law from a recognized university and a Postgraduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law
  2. Advocate of the High Court of Kenya
  3. Valid Practicing certificate
  4. 3 years of relevant experience
  5. Good research, report writing and presentation skills
  6. Demonstrable knowledge of national, regional and international human rights principles and standards
  7. Demonstrable knowledge in advocacy campaigns or monitoring
  8. Excellent IT skills, with working knowledge for the various packages
  9. Shown merit and ability as reflected in work performance and results in the last 3 years
  10. Meet the requirements of Chapter 6 of the Constitution on leadership and integrity
