The 3rd edition of the Nairobi Legal Awards Women’s Soiree was held at the Sarova Stanley Hotel on 15th March 2024. The highlight of this inspiring event was the unveiling of the top 50 women lawyers.
Women’s presence in the justice system makes a remarkable difference in justice delivery. Therefore, the Nairobi Legal Awards (NLA) profiles women lawyers who have achieved notable success in propelling the legal profession forward.
Men and women from across the legal profession graced the event to celebrate and honor the achievements of these outstanding women lawyers moving in excellence in various facets of the law. The areas of practice that these outstanding women represent include civil society, commercial law, conflict resolution, and litigation. Additionally, the event shed the spotlight on the remarkable female advocates in legal academia and those renowned for distinguished service.
According to the statistics from January 2023 highlighted in The Star newspaper, Kenya has 6440 active female advocates. Emerging among the top 50 women lawyers from a pool of over 6000 women is no small feat.
During last year’s launch of the Women in Law and Leadership report, Faith Odhiambo, President LSK, gave a memorable speech calling on women in law to be the disruptive cells in the legal mainframe. “In every sphere we find ourselves, we must create unique identities in the spaces that we have. I urge you that we seek to be extraordinary and create ripples in this legal fraternity.”
So, today, we join the NLA in celebrating the outstanding top 50 women lawyers making waves in their practice areas despite the challenges. We say to them, “Hongera dada,” receive your flowers. Thank you for paving the way for the next generation of women lawyers.
And to the women lawyers who have yet to feature among the top 50 women lawyers, keep moving forward. You are making significant strides, and we cheer you on.
