SHINING STARS OF THE NAIROBI LEGAL GALAXY: A Night of Triumph and Tenacity

The Nairobi Legal Awards, an initiative of the Law Society of Kenya Nairobi Branch, unfolded to a fascinating audience, leaving no doubt that Nairobi’s legal elites had come to celebrate and be celebrated at the prestigious Safari Park Nairobi on the 4th of  November 2023. This was the 6th installation of the awards, dubbed “The Vanguard” edition.

The night was illuminated with brilliance, where law teachers, esteemed law firms, and seasoned lawyers mingled with the brightest legal stars of today, all under the same constellation.

The awards spanned a multitude of categories, honouring different practitioners of the legal profession within Nairobi and Kiambu County. Here are some of the most coveted awards:

In-House  Categories

These legal gladiators, embedded within organizations, ensure that the ship sails smoothly through turbulent legal waters. The sub-branches for this category were;

Public Sector Lawyer of the Year 

  • Winner: Alexander Muasya Muteti, OGW, from the ODPP. He bagged this award for the second time.
  • First Runners-up: Festus Mwiti Kinoti of IPOA
  • Second Runner-up: Dr Johnson Okoth Okello of Parliament
Private Sector Lawyer of the Year 
  • Winner: Mary Wangari Wamae of Equity Bank.
  • First Runners-up: Belinda Nganga of HFC Limited
  • Second Runner-up: Nadida Rowlands Obara of EABL
Civil Society Lawyer of the Year
  • Winner: Elsie Chemurgor of  the ICJ
  • First Runner-up: Annette Mbogo of Kituo cha Sheria.
  • Second Runner-up: Alex Maleche of KELIN
Public Sector Legal Department of the Year 
  • Winner: The winner was the National Council For Law Reporting, known for their strategic legal acumen. This was their third time winning the award.
  • First Runners-up: Independent Policing Oversight Authority
  • Second Runner-up: Office of the Data Protection Commissioner
PUBLIC SECTOR LEGAL DEPARTMENT OF THE YEAR - FIRST RUNNERS UP-Independent Policing Oversight Authority
Independent Policing Oversight Authority , First Runner-up- Public Sector Department of the Year
Private Sector Legal Department of the Year
  • Winner: This honour recognized  NCBA as a private sector entity that had harmonized the realms of commerce and legal expertise.
  • First Runners-up: Old Mutual Holdings PLC
  • Second Runner-up: Gulf Africa Bank
NCBA, Winner, The Private Sector Legal Department of the Year.
Civil Society Organisation of the Year

The award spotlighted the tireless champions of social justice. The civil society organizations that received applause for their steadfast dedication to human rights and equality were:

  • Winner: Refugee Consortium of Kenya.
  • First Runner-up: Justice Defenders
  • Second Runner-up: Kituo cha Sheria. 

Law Teachers of the Year

  • Winner: Dr. Francis Kariuki  of Strathmore University
  • First Runner-up: Dr Jackson Bett of the University of Nairobi, who won the award in 2021.
  • Second Runner-up: Irene Ndegwa of Mount Kenya University

Judge of the Year

This honour celebrates seasoned judges whose wisdom, impartiality, and groundbreaking judgments have made a profound impact on the legal landscape. Those recognised were;

  • Winner: Hon David Majanja of Milimani Commercial and Tax Division. The honorable justice has been awarded before, under this category.
  • First Runner-up: Hon Justice Mugure Thande Of Milimani Constitution and Human Rights Division
  • Second Runner-up: Hon Justice  Oguttu Mboya Of Environment and Land Court

It was a moment that celebrated the judiciary’s indispensable role in upholding the rule of law.

ADR Practitioners of the Year:

In an era where litigation can be protracted and expensive, alternative dispute resolution specialists shined. The award was given to;

  • Winner: Dr Kenneth Wyne Mutuma of Kihara & Wyne Advocates.
  • First Runner-up: Samuel Nderitu of Mbiriri & Ngugi Advocates
  • Second Runner-up: Oyuyo Jacquiline Lucy of Umsizi Law LLP.

The recipients of the awards were celebrated for their extraordinary skill in resolving complex disputes through arbitration and mediation.

Judicial Officer of the Year category

  • Winner: The Award went to Hon Velna Mochache of the Small Claims Court.
  • First Runners-up– Hon Stella Atambo of Thika Law Courts
  • Second Runner-up: Asuna Christine of Milimani Commercial Court.

Pupil Master of the Year

  • This award spotlighted Lilian Renee Omondi of Oraro and Company Advocates.

External Practitioners categories

Litigation Practitioner of the Year 
  • Winner: Prof.Githu  Muigai.EGH, SC(Mohammed Muigai LLP
  • First Runner-up: Prof Tom Ojienda SC(Ojienda and Associates)
  • Second Runner-up: Ochiel J Dudley(Katiba Institute)
Commercial Practitioner of the Year
  • Winner: Alex Khanyi of CDH Kieti Law
  • First Runner-up: Stephen Mallow of TripleOKLaw
  • Second Runner-up: Josephine L.M Righa of Josephine Righa Advocates
Manager Partner of the Year
  • Winner: Benson Ngugi of Igeria and Ngugi Advocates
  • First Runner-up: Nigel Shaw, ENS Africa
  • Second Runner-up: Geoffrey Imende of Mohammed Muigai Advocates     

Vanguard Award

The highlight of the red carpet event was the Vanguard Award. This award was presented to Immaculate Kassait, who was honoured for embodying the spirit of a Vanguard Advocate for her exemplary performance in the field of Data Protection.

Outstanding Achievement Award

  • Winner: Kioko Kilukumi SC of Kilukumi and Advocates

Committed Service Award

  • Winner: Anne C Adhiambo of A &N Advocates won the award

Branch Chairs Award

  • Winner: Dr.Naomi Njuguna  of UON

Lawyers of the Year Categories

These accolades recognized the paragons of legal excellence. Whether young or seasoned, these lawyers have demonstrated an indomitable commitment to justice.

The category for the Young Lawyer of the Year was coveted by very able and competitive young lawyers. The recipients were:

  • Winner: Kivindyo Munyao, who’s a senior Dispute Resolution Associate at TripleOK Advocates and was applauded for being among Kenya’s Leading Tax Lawyers by expertise and experience.
  • First Runner-up: Ian Nyachonga of MMW Advocate LLP
  • Second Runner-up: Barbara Kwanga of Bond Advocates

Lawyer of the Year

The best-seasoned lawyer award was handed to:

  • Winner: Professor Githu Muigai EGH SC of Mohammed Muigai LLP, a champion of justice. The Professor also received the Lifetime Achievement Award Last Year.
  • First Runner-up: Paul Kibugi Muite of P.K Muite and Company Advocates.
  • Second Runner-up: Professor Tom Ojienda SC of Ojienda & Associates.

Large and Small-Medium Enterprise Law Firms of the Year

Large and Small-Medium-Enterprise Law Firms had their moment of glory for their excellence in delivering legal services.

Small Medium Enterprise Law Firm of the Year. 
  • Winner: Igeria and Ngugi Advocates
  • First Runner-up: Nicholas Gitonga & Associates Advocate
  • Second Runner-up: Andrew and Steve Advocates.
Large Law Firm of the Year      
  • Winner: Bowmans Kenya. The firm has been shortlisted in this category a couple of times, and this was their first time to bag the award. The Managing Partner of Bowmans Kenya, Paras Shah, shared the joy with his LinkedIn community and wrote, “We are incredibly proud of this recognition as it underlines the crucial role dynamism and agile thinking play in the development of the legal industry in Kenya and how our people embody these traits.’’
  • First Runner-up: CDH Kieti Law LLP
  • Second Runner-up: Mohammed Muigai LLP

As the awards concluded, the message was clear: the legal community in Nairobi is a constellation of brilliance, a galaxy of integrity, and a testament to the enduring pursuit of justice, ethics, and excellence. The Nairobi Legal Awards celebrated not only the stars that already shine but also those rising on the legal horizon, destined to be the shining beacons of tomorrow.
