Caritas Nairobi Kenya is hiring a Legal officer.

The organization is seeking to recruit a detail-oriented and proactive candidate for the socio-economic empowerment programme Legal and Administration Officer to ensure smooth compliance in its operations.

Position Summary

The Legal and Administration Officer shall be responsible for providing legal advice to Caritas Nairobi and its affiliated Programmes and ensure compliance with legal requirements, advise on legal matters, mitigate legal risks against Caritas Nairobi. Ensure application of Administrative and financial rules and regulations as well as implementing good corporate governance in Caritas Nairobi.

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Representing and handling litigation and disputes matters involving Caritas Nairobi,
  2. Social Economic Empowerment Programme and self-help groups’ Human Resource management
  3. Ensure elaborate legal risk assessment and management within Caritas Nairobi programmes/projects
  4. Ensuring compliance with all relevant laws and regulations, including those related to lending practices, interest rates, and consumer protection within Caritas Nairobi Socio-Economic Empowerment Programme.
  5. Providing administrative support within the Socio – Economic Empowerment Programme and assisting in Human Resource management.
  6. Develop legal and regulatory framework applicable across Caritas Nairobi operations and field work activities.
  7. Monitor and review compliance to legal, regulatory and contractual requirements and changes across Caritas Nairobi programmes/projects
  8. Identify emerging legal issues affecting Caritas Nairobi for compliance.
  9. Define necessary level of knowledge on existing and emerging regulatory compliance requirements across Caritas Nairobi9. Conduct research, and provide legal opinions on matters affecting Caritas Nairobi and its affiliated programmes.
  10. Provide guidance, advise and training to Caritas Nairobi and its affiliated Programmes/projects
  11. Ensure documents are properly kept, secured and archived.
  12. Safeguard client data and maintain records in accordance with data protection regulation.
  13. Coordinate internal compliance, reviews and monitoring activities to ensure legal compliance with Caritas Nairobi.
  14. Prepare staff handbooks.
  15. Interpret Caritas Nairobi’s terms and conditions of service, rules and standards operation and other documents that are legally binding.
  16. Attend meetings representing Caritas Nairobi and its affiliated Programmes.
  17. Attend to and advice walk-in Clients in need of Legal Services.
  18. Any other responsibilities deemed necessary or as delegated in order to meet the level of services within Caritas Nairobi
Skills & Qualifications
  1. Bachelor’s degree in Law [LLB] from a recognized institution.
  2. Post Graduate Diploma in Law.
  3. Advocate of the High Court of Kenya.
  4. A Valid Practicing Certificate.
  5. Should have 3 years of experience in the legal department in a busy organization, financial institution or law firm
  6. Organizational skills and attention to details.
  7. Knowledge of contract law, financial transactions, and other legal aspects of microfinance operations.
  8. Strong communication skills for dealing with clients, colleagues, and regulatory bodies.
  9. A basic understanding of financial principles, such as accounting, credit assessment, and risk management.
  10. A strong understanding of local and national financial regulations and compliance requirements.
  11. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
