Theme: Privacy, Data Protection and Surveillance in the Digital Age
Over five years since the enactment of the Data Protection Act, 2019, Kenya stands at the crossroads of innovation and intrusion. From biometric registration and AI-powered analytics to CCTV networks and social media monitoring, technology continues to redefine privacy and personal data use.
Data Privacy and Governance Students Association – UoN in collaboration with the Data Privacy and Governance Society of Kenya (DPGSK) and partner institutions, invites university students across Kenya to participate in this year’s Data Protection Essay Competition.
✍️ Call for Submissions
Students are invited to write insightful essays exploring how state and corporate surveillance is reshaping privacy in modern Kenya.
Suggested topics include:
Surveillance and the Right to Privacy in Kenya: Balancing security with civil liberties.
The Rise of the Surveillance Society: How technology reshapes trust, consent, and freedom.
Biometric Surveillance and Human Rights: Between identification and intrusion.
State Surveillance and the Rule of Law: Oversight, accountability, and transparency.
Corporate Surveillance: How digital platforms monetize and manipulate personal data.
Social Media Monitoring: Privacy trade-offs in the era of constant connectivity.
Artificial Intelligence and Predictive Surveillance: The privacy risks of algorithmic decision-making.

Eligibility: Undergraduate students from all universities in Kenya
Winners will also receive certificates, publication opportunities, and recognition during Privacy Week 2026.
