The role will support A&K and its affiliates and report to the General Counsel.
Roles and Responsibilities
Act as the in-house legal counsel in A&K and its affiliates, including:
- Draft, review, and negotiate contracts and other legal documents on behalf of A&K and its affiliates, including: (a) regular vendor/commercial contracts; (b) client-facing terms of engagement; and (c) any other agreements.
- Develop standard templates for regularly used in-house contract templates.
- Together with the General Counsel, identify and manage legal risks associated with the firm’s operations and develop strategies to mitigate those risks.
- Liaise with stakeholders to develop and implement policies and procedures that ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations and professional ethics requirements including data protection, anti-money laundering compliance and other internal policies and programmes).
- Provide legal support to special projects and initiatives as assigned by firm leadership.
- Support the firm’s knowledge management and learning and development department, including:
- Together with the Learning & Development team and Partners/practice heads, plan and deliver training sessions, workshops, and knowledge-sharing events to share best practices, new legal (including data protection, anti-money laundering compliance and other internal policies and programmes).
- Provide legal support to special projects and initiatives as assigned by firm leadership
- Together with the Learning & Development team and Partners/practice heads, plan and deliver training sessions, workshops, and knowledge-sharing events to share best practices, new legal developments, and firm policies.
- Stay up to date on legal developments and industry trends relevant to the firm’s practice areas.
- Undertake in-depth legal research and analysis on complex and novel legal issues using various tools and databases to deliver quality tailored legal research and analysis to assist the firm’s lawyers and clients in different practice areas.
- Work with client-facing teams to identify and extract valuable insights from previous cases, transactions, and client matters.
- Assisting in developing and improving standard templates for contracts, advise memos and other legal templates.
- Undertake audits and evaluations to measure the performance of knowledge management processes and find areas for improvement.
- Share information with the relevant teams and encourage a culture of knowledge sharing and collaboration within the firm and its affiliates by creating communication channels and platforms for staff to exchange insights, ideas, and expertise.
- Communicate with external experts, regulators, and industry associations and monitor and report on relevant legal developments, trends, and news in the local and global markets to obtain and share insights and information.
- Assisting the General Counsel and Partners in facilitating, building and sustaining a relationship with key stakeholders such as the Law Society of Kenya, AG’s Chambers, the National Assembly Clerks, Government Printers and those responsible for legislative drafting as required.
Experience and personal qualities

The following experience is preferred:
- Law degree from a reputable institution.
- 4 – 7 years post-qualification experience in a mid-sized law firm or a busy in-house practice (experience in corporate or commercial law will be an added advantage).
- Great grasp of Kenyan law.
- Familiar with electronic research and legal research using various tools and platforms.
- Experience in a compliance role will be an added advantage.
